Foreign. While foreign often brings up images of things outside our own nation, it can also apply to things outside of or different from our normal environment, or even something which is out of place in general. (Sara Rosso)
I have traveled much in my life, to some amazing and wonderful places. For this challenge I wanted to use a photo from a place where I felt foreign, totally out of my element in a magical place. This collage fits my magical definition of FOREIGN …
I was the foreigner inside this living testament to the exotic. Visitors are airlocked in and out of their habitat for the safety of the butterflies. I was allowed to visit these incredible creatures for as long as I wished. With telephoto and macro lenses I captured the foreign, the exotic and the exquisite. I had great difficulty leaving this place of beauty and peace and will never forget the sensation of the butterfly that sat on my wrist, even as I took some of these shots!

A beautiful, exciting way to share the places you’d been too. Just like the butterflies, I bet they were magical.

Beautiful butterflies – I lived in Gainesville for a few years & visited the museum quite a few times, but never went to the butterfly rainforest – I guess I will live vicariously through your shots!

Great! Are you a local? The Harn Museum of Art next door is free and worth a visit too…and if you have some extra time, just to the north on SW 34th St (the road the museums are off of) is a really neat little park that is pretty easy to miss! It’s called Loblolly Woods Nature Park – there is a small creek called hogtown creek that flows through the park – there is a nice nature trail and boardwalk and the creek itself is a lot of fun to explore – very shallow and filled with shark’s teeth and other fossils – there are always lots of butterflies and damselflies to photograph.

Not local … fledgling snowbird escaping the Canadian winter for a few weeks every year. Thank you for this, Nick. One of my favourite past times is photo mini safari’s, and I will definitely check these out!

I am looking forward to another trip back at some point, especially now that I’m more confident with my camera equipment. Might do a better job … Good thing we don’t pay for film anymore or I’d go broke in the Rainforest!

Sounds wonderful, Cheryl. I can never get butterflies to remain still when I’m trying to photograph them. Beautiful shots, all.

These are stunning shots – we visited a butterfly exhibit at the biodome – watched a butterfly lay her eggs on the back of a man’s jacket … a lot of people were hovering around him telling not to move yet he didn’t get to see what was happening. When done, we releaed him 😉 , he removed his jacket and took it to the reception area where they were most happy to relieve him of his eggs which they would keep and incubate. True story 🙂
