Illumination
Lights are functional — everyday objects in our rooms and on our streets. Yet lights can be powerful symbols: signs of life, curiosity, and discovery. (Cheri Lucas)
I don’t work with lights any more. The never-ending fascination for me in the past few years is the challenge to make a photo work using only the natural lighting available. So I don’t have any ‘lights’ shots to submit other than post-processing experiments, and that doesn’t seem fair for this challenge.
Here’s one of my favourite shots using the rising sun’s reflection off, and through, the morning mist on the lake. I nudged the lens as far east into the sun as possible without completely diffusing the shot … or being temporarily blinded!
Check out these interpretations more on point with this week’s challenge:

A picture to remember. The mist, the Sun’s gentle morning rays, the calm water, a single potted plant on a walkway, everything blended to create a magical moment. Must be beautiful to wake up at dawn and just watch the sunrise unfold while covered in blanket and drinking hot coffee. Great post!

Fog can be a great thing to work with, especially if the sun is just coming out. Good idea to push the camera towards the light

Thanks for the mention Mike! I find lake mist particularly fascinating because there is nothing to interfere with a magical, almost gossamer, saturation point in the light, magnified by the reflection off the water. Even more fascinating, watching the still lake come to life as the sun heats the air … hence the ripples in the foreground just beginning to roll East to West!

It’s mist that forms when the air and water don’t match in temperature … more spectacular in the late autumn than early spring. Thanks for the feedback!

You captured that first flash of day just beautifully! The water to the left of the dock has not quite let go of night, while the east-most water is already claimed by the sun.

Thanks, Janet. I absolutely love sitting at the end of the dock, thermos of coffee, watching, waiting for the sun to come up. The mists of late summer can rise off the water 3, 4 times the height of the 80′ to 100′ treeline!
