A stunning shot, Cheryl! The crisp focus and the repeating patterns draw me in. I knew it was some kind of seed pod before I read the comments, but it could also be a topographical shot of an alien landscape. Well done!!!

Thanks, Janet … Speaking of aliens, the cap (left one intact in the upper left corner of the comp) has hooked ‘fangs’ that hold it closed until the seeds are ready to sow. They’d get a great grip on fur or clothing.

Single poppy seed heads are lovely, grouped together they are absolutely wonderful!

Thanks, Gilly. Can’t believe I almost missed the grouping I was so engrossed in harvesting the seeds. Sowing today! A little late, but we are enjoying a lovely warm autumn so far.

Have not read any comments so this is my untarnished best guess: are they the centre of some exotic flower once the petals have fallen off? If so, I’m guessing a Spring flower, given that they look super dried out.
Anyway, guessing aside, a lovely composition! They almost look alive, like they’re jockeying for position.

Ah! [I’ve read the other comments now.] What a wonderful eye you have. I love that you saw this in the midst of all that shaking…

Great guess, Carin. Poppy seed pods. A pal gave me a bag full from her garden for my new one. She and I spent a day in wellies and raincoats while I photographed her’s … as the rain fell on us all! Here’s what I hope the poppies will look like next year http://jpgmag.com/lightbox/3570715

I tried to grow poppies for years and they just never thrived so I finally gave up. When they’re happy they’re REALLY happy and when they’re not… grow irises. Anyway, I hope they find the air and the soil and the sound of the waves lapping very appealing and grow nicely for you!

Iris are my absolute favourite flower, particularly beardless and exotic varieties. We just put in a bed of Siberian Iris!

Nice tones, contrast, and great detail. Is it handheld or tripod? These pods make me think of some kind of boating equipment (killocks?), or maybe even deep sea creatures, anenomes or barnacles of some kind. (Can you tell I’m a Maritimer?!)

Like that imagination of yours, Sheila. These are from the land – poppy seed pods. (Can you tell I’m a lubber?) I hand held using the edge of the table to steady the camera. Still had to take multiple exposures to get one that was relatively crisp.

I think they are seed pods of some kind? And a beautiful composition. I saw an exhibition (or maybe an installation) recently of sets of things found along the banks of a river. There were many many groupings like this of various things found in nature, but also sets of things like cartridge cases, plastic tags and other non-natural things. Fascinating – as is your photo.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I was so focused on harvesting the poppy seeds I almost missed the shot as I piled the empty husks on the table. Hmmm inspired … I will watch the shore line here for natural and non-natural items. Wonder what I’ll find …

This is stunning, Cheryl. Love the pattern, which is emphasized in black and white. They look like pods or seeds of some sort(?), but it’s hard to tell the actual size of them from this photo. Anyway, whatever they are, they’re beautiful in your composition.

Poppy seed pods, Allyson. A shopping bag full from a pal’s garden. I spent some time in the rain photographing her’s and couldn’t stop oohing and ahhhing! I hope they take up here in Zone 5.

Thank you, Barbara … you make me blush. Poppy seed pods. I spent a sunny hour on the verandah shaking the crap out of them, harvesting the seeds. A gift from a pal for the new garden. As I stacked the shaken-not-stirred pods on the coffee table I saw a shot in the orderly disorder!
