Lovely composition, Cheryl, and such a good choice to render it in black and white. I love the contrasting lines, both man-made and natural — of the slats of wood in the ceiling, the curve of the roof, the trunks of the trees, and then that one central, more ornate feature, the wrought-iron(?) light fixture. The angle really makes this shot.

Thanks, Allyson. It’s a shot I didn’t go looking for … it was just ‘there’ when I took a big stretch while shoveling snow off the verandah.

A very visually inviting image….makes me want to be in that space. There’s an ethereal quality to the trees that also draws me in. I like the mystery that b&w creates.

What a gorgeous angle you’ve chosen here. Or, more likely, it chose you. If the lines of the porch weren’t enough, that iron light fixture really seals the ‘man-made elements’ side of the frame. It’s like you and the trees, watching each other, a mutual admiration society, two forms of beauty.

I think the trees are keeping an eye on us, Carin. After all we invaded their century-old space. In winter there’s a lot of loud creaking and cracking going on out there … a bit spooky.

Do you sit out there in winter, or just dream about when you will be able to? I love your header photo by the way 🙂

We do sit out there in winter, Gilly, though not as often as the warmer seasons.

I love the idea of you sitting there all bundled up in winter, perhaps with a steaming cup of something warming your hands, looking out at the trees. And am also imagining how lovely it must be in a downpour on a summer’s day. A beautiful evocative photo!

There’s an etherial quality to this photo Cheryl – almost wistful – it allows you step right into nature but still be comfortably ensconced on the veranda.

Thanks, Allison. I almost missed the shot. I was admiring those towering pines, nature at its most beautiful, while shoveling snow off the verandah. The curve of the roof caught my eye, as it sliced a hard curved line against the forested backdrop.

That is an exquisite composition Cheryl; I love how the arc of the (Palladian?) window intersects and divides the space in such a perfect way — the majesty of the truly great outdoors on one side, the black tracery of the chandelier making such a pronounced statement on the other against the fainter horizontal ceiling lines. Very nice. And what a sweep of view from that window; that must be a magnificent room!

Thank you, Barbara … Nature is a magnificent room! This is the front verandah. During the design phase it was important that we had places to be outdoors regardless of the weather. We sit out there all bundled up in winter too.
