A wonderful fish out of water! Love the eyes – wish I could reach for a Moose Head right now!

Me too, Janet! I find Alanna Baird’s recycled work at tinfish.ca fascinating.

Ah! I was wondering why it had Moosehead caps for eyes but, reading the other comments, I understand. Is New Brunswick the home of things made out of old tin cans, then? I remember when I was a child, people made “tinsel” for Christmas trees out of the little metal strips left over from opening tins of sardines and mackerel, saved all year long. But you have something infinitely more creative. I especially love the flare of the tail. Also, the shadowy boreal forest behind him – wonderfully out of place, yet evocative of seaweed!

Alanna Baird (the tinfish artist) has made quite an NB career out of old tin cans and her website is simply put, WOW!

Ah, it IS canned fish! Now I can study it more closely. And I see those Moosehead eyes. The verticals in the background that gives it a nice sense of juxtaposition, picks up the vertical lines in the ‘body’. I realize you’re just holding it out for the pic, but it’s a lovely composition. And a very lovely piece!

Without reading the above, I too was guessing a weather vane made out of tin cans. What personality she/he has! The red touch gives it just a bolt of colour against the wonderful patina of the rusting metal.

Thanks, Allison. This shot was for you, mostly … didn’t know if you saw any of Alanna Baird’s tin fish when you were in St. Andrews. This cute critter was a housewarming gift from our NB pals who live in St. Andrews and were just here for a few days.

Talk about a Fish our of Water!!! wonderful. Intriguing. First thought, a weather-vane, but I think not??? A hanging decoration on your water-view porch??? Very mysterious and a lovely contrast of the shiny metal against the wilderness verticality beyond.

(S)he is hanging in my studio, Barabara, but was dangling at arm’s length for this shot. Pals who came from St. Andrews-by-the-Sea NB brought it along as a housewarming gift. They just knew I’d love it, especially with the Moose Head beer caps for eyes!
