Speaking of chicken, could it be chicken-of-the-woods? Which is edible, though with careful cooking. However, it looks as though it may have gills, in which case it isn’t chicken-of-the-woods and I have no idea what it is. It’s beautiful though, like roses almost, and beautifully photographed as well.

Definitely has gills, Elizabeth. I will have to look up chicken-of-the-woods.

How raw and beautiful. Are they actually called mushroom flowers, Cheryl? They do appear to have sprung out of older growth. Interesting what we can spot in nature if we take the time, isn’t it.

I don’t know Allyson … I named them forn what they put me in mind of. Spotted them on an ancient, rotting tree trunk.

It’s definitely the season but I’ve never seen fungi like this 🙂

Me neither, Gilly! They are quite tiny, and I almost walked right past them.

Beautiful beautiful — the dear old tree trunk wearing such a stunning double corsage, dressed for an anniversary celebration … or just for a fine fall morning. Those clusters are exquisite, Cheryl, and very interesting from a naturalists’s point of view too, the way the lower one rises out of last year’s remains. A very elegant and exquisite composition, with much to consider.

Are those little mushroom flowers Cheryl? They are beautiful and so striking with the crisp white against the dark background. I have never seen anything like that!

They are Allison … on a rotting tree stump. First time I’ve spotted this particular fungus.

Exactly, Cheryl! We’re thinking (more or less) along the same line.

You need a mushroom identification book, though I’m with you on the ‘too chicken’ sentiment. Be careful out there!
