Such an unusual and beautiful composition! There is as you suggest, a strong sense of a character or a spirit there but it’s also just a remarkable juxtaposition of splinters and fragments, shades of black and brown on white. It could be a very striking textile design.

It strikes (ahem) me as having the appearance of something like *nature’s totem*… and what I thought was the sun (and shall be in my mind still) is a perfect complement to the theme represented of growth, destruction, regrowth. Love it.

Carin, you are just so cool. At the time of the lightening strike, others were busy helping our neighbour with repairs. I stood mezmerized by this “Spirit of Lightening” nature carved out of what was left of the 70′ pine. After taking its photo, gave my head a shake and helped pick up the many 3′ chunks of arrow-head shaped wooden missiles blasted all over the island.

Thank you Colline … nature (lightening in particular) takes credit for this one!

Fascinating shot. I knew right away what it was, because we were at a cottage a couple of summers ago when a tree was hit by lightning. Though, in that case, you could see scorch marks on the tree. Still, one doesn’t forget! I like the starkness of this shot, the jagged edges, the warm red of the wood against the white background. Did you create the aura around it, or was that natural? Either way, that framing is effective.

I used Picasa3 “Lomo-ish” feature for that aura, Allyson.

Nature’s scene, Diana. This is what’s left of a 70′ pine struck by lightening.

And yes, beautiful too — the misty background and the sense of a woody fragrance that emanates. Woody that is, not really “woodsy”.

The lightening certainly intensified that lovely aroma.

I am trying to think of all the adjectives that might describe this upright profile. “Hortatory”; “exhortational” (spell checker does not like!); forbidding; grim; know-it all; disapproving… (????). “Martial” even??? (That upright sword.) I look forward indeed to the story of this mystical warrior, who, I am sure, is making sure that you do not get into trouble down there in the deep south.

Barabara … a friend of ours lives on an island within a short boating distance. This 70′ white pine, 20 steps from his screened porch, was struck by lightening in the early dawn while Jon was still in bed. The top exploded sending arrow shaped missiles flying across the island – without so much as a tiny hole in his screens.
