We had a honey extractor like this when I was a kid. I was fascinated by the golden river that poured out the tap. How delightful to see one again.

How wonderful that must have been to witness … honey combs in, ‘golden river’ pouring out the tap!

So I guess it presses down and the honey comes out, then they can use the wax for something else? Fascinating to see the montage of photos, especially the inner workings.

I was taking the shots at the hotest time of day with my cell camera, Elizabeth. The glare off the screen meant I was shooting blind. The bits and pieces were still able to tell a story.

Is it hot there now, Cheryl? It has warmed up a bit here this week and we no longer need mittens but it’s still not exactly hot!

Geez, Elizabeth, we moved out of the mittens a few weeks ago and have been enjoying cool mornings and hot afternoons. A bit dry. Need rain. Ban on open fires. So glad things are warming up out there!

Centrifugal force turning the crank to spin the honey from the combs, Elizabeth. Barabara had one of this as a kid … got to see the ‘golden river’ pouring out the tap at the bottom fo the unit.

I’m also fascinated by the photo composition, the montage. I may need a lesson. Please. And thank you… (:

Picasa3 does all the work on this one, Carin. But WordPress Media Settings offer a collage option too.

Did a quick google search and see that the same principles (I think) are still used in a modern version. But this piece… well, wouldn’t you love to hear the stories of the original beekeeper. Would be a tricky thing to do up there, wouldn’t it? I mean with the bears milling about, licking their Winnie the Pooh chops…

I’d love to give it a home in my garden, Carin but someone still loves this family heirloom despite the fact it sits on a hill near the marina looking sadly abandoned. But, no …

What a fascinating object, I’m glad you tagged it because I would never have guessed. Do yo know how it works? turn the handle to press and then the honey comes out the tap?

The chunks of honeycomb are placed in the wire baskets, Gilly. Crank the handle, the cages spin and centrifugal force extracts the honey. This antique mechanism still runs with minimal effort and is silent in its workings.
