On Wednesdays all over the internet bloggers post a photo with no words to explain it. The idea is the photo says so much it doesn’t need a description.

Oh, how marvellous! The bud and the photo itself. I too was puzzling over what kind of plant it would be until I read the comments. I think this photo could win a prize.

What an absolutely wonderful sign of spring Cheryl. The colours and the fresh newness and determination be there, up and standing tall!

The best surprise, Allison, was seeing a silver birch leaf bud from above. Usually I’m looking up at a birch. The sapling had been snapped off at head height over the winter, and I thought it was dead. But a spray of branches popped about two inches above ground!

There are so many fascinating things about this remarkable plant, Cheryl. The way it has what look almost like long fingers (and very well manicured) holding the incipient blossom (I think it will be a blossom of some sort?). And then the puzzle of what this will turn out to be. (Can you follow up with a future shot as this develops?) And then the blurry beauty of the forest floor that the plant blends into. It’s kind of shy and bold all at once. I love it!

I’ve only ever seen the silver birch leaf bud from below until this morning, Barabara. A sapling had snapped off over the winter at about head height. I thought it was dead and planned to harvest it for the two big planters on the porch. But this morning a spray of branches two inches above the forest floor were pushing out these amazing leaf buds.
