This is just evocative of so many things. I especially love the contrast of the two paddles – one slightly worn and and one weathered grey, and all the travels and adventures they represent. The composition is perfect in itself but also makes the viewer long to take up painting or to paddle off into that mysterious river in the background landscape.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I loved this shop owner’s accident of placement, and the fact that she gave me the ‘OK’ to take the shot.

Deeply philosophical, was my first take on this picture. I love that little bit of “landscape” or reflection or … something … in the top right corner, which gives the whole thing almost a Renaissance sense (if the easel with the arrow were replaced by a mother and child???). This is terrific!

Thanks, Barabara. The ‘landscape’ was a painting in an old frame propped on a ledge in the background. I did crop out the full length antique fur coat. It was a gorgeous old beauty and a visual distraction from the main event. What stories it could tell, eh?

Ahh antique shops are brilliant to wander around, but I’m not brave enough to take photos.

Antique stores where I live are very ‘barn’ like raggle taggle set ups, Gilly. But, I usually ask if it’s ok to take pics.

“This Way to the Lake!” Though, I imagine it’s a little chilly in your neck of the woods now for any more paddling. Believe it or not, I have a friend who lives in downtown Toronto, near the lake, and she went kayaking within the past two weeks. (We’ve had some spots of very warm weather, though I think we’re now heading into winter proper.) I like the rustic pallette of this one, the faded oars, the pitted sign, as if this weren’t set up for the photo. And perhaps it wasn’t! Is the easel made of branches?

I was checking out a new antique store in town. Saw some old paddles in the back room. When I asked about them, the proprietor brought them out and propped them against this sign perched on a birch branch easel. Too good a wee bit of serendipity to pass up the shot.

Let’s go that way! Last chance for summer over there:) I love your monochromatic colour scheme here Cheryl – so fitting for the subject. And I love the snow flakes – a perfect foil.
