Thank you, Janet. We get so many exotic varieties of fungi … wonder if this will reappear this year?

Surely this is the KING OF THE FOREST in disguise! What a marvellous evocation of earthiness and growth (and longevity!) Surely this fellow is very old! I can smell the whole forest floor as I study this fungal beauty. A winged beauty. Which I think is what made me feel, on first viewing, that “he” is a royal spirit in disguise.

Perhaps it is a royal spirit in disguise, Barabara, I love your imagination! We lost a young hawk during Spring mating season last year. S/he flew into the second floor window of the guest house during the aerial chase. Sigh!

You’ve shown us a world in that mushroom. Really. It begs a slow savouring, time to appreciate all those nuances, the magic of its appearance and the wonder of what happens to it next. (I recently saw a wonderful slo-mo; there are oodles, I can’t find it now) Beautiful shot and most magnificent ‘model’.
Hmmm. I’m suddenly in the mood for soup…

We grow such exotic varieties of fungi up here Carin. The base on this one looks like wood and, of course, those feathered wings ready to lift off. Wish I knew which varieties, if any, are edible because I’d be shooting and harvesting!

There is something very soothing and sculptural about this Cheryl. You’ve captured such detail but at the same time allowed the background to soften the effect.

Thanks, Allison. This particular fungus put me in mind of wings, perhaps hawk wings. It looked ready to take flight …
