What is it about them that so fascinates us? Whatever it is, you’ve captured it perfectly in this series of photos.

Elizabeth, I’d never seen one this large, or mature. What fascinated me was how pre-historic it looked. The dinosaur-like spiney tail fascinated me almost as much as the ‘chain maille’ protecting its neck and front legs.

Wow, huge! I can see how he’d stop traffic. We had a much smaller version at the Shopper’s Drug Mart and three cars stopped to deal with it. One moved it to the pond (where he’d been heading), another kept miscellaneous passersby informed (everyone understood) and the third merely smiled and thought what a lovely world it can be at times when we all pull together. Sometimes all you need is a turtle. Mother Earth. (:

You be #3 I assume and smart not to try to move them, even the small ones. How does anyone ever know where they are travelling to? Let ’em pass … or they’ll just start the journey over again.

Sorry about that, Gilly. It was on the road with nothing for perspective. I wanted to get as much detail of the carapace and head as possible, as well as the spined tail. I’d say BIG, tail to snout about 18″.

Well I’m glad I asked because I would never have guessed that big. No wonder no one wanted to try to move it! Thanks Cheryl, I’ve learnt something new today!

A grand old soul for sure, Diana, who appears to be wearing chain maille around his neck and legs. He was stopping traffic on our road. No one was brave enough to try to pick him up and move him out of the way.
