A gasp of pleasure when I saw this! As others have remarked: the colours, the composition! The picture speaks of all things summer! Lovely.

Gorgeous capture, Cheryl — the colours, the composition, and the way the butterfly has spread its wings, posing beautifully! There’s such detail visible on his body. Butterflies usually flit about, making them hard to photograph — it’s amazing you got this shot. I’ve taken an awful lot of blurry photos of butterflies!

My reward for doing some dreaded dead-heading in the garden, Allyson. It landed on the tallest blossom right beside my head! While it was feasting on the nectar I got as many shots as it took my cell camera to keep cycling up. And from many different angles and wing positions … deleted a lot of ‘soft’ shots hoping for one good one!

Wow! This is a result of either incredible luck or incredible patience! I’ve tried to photograph butterflies so I know. Just gorgeous composition and colour, and perfection in the butterfly’s position.

I’m pretty sure I discovered it newly emerged, Elizabeth. It can take up to an hour for it to fully extend and pump fluid through its wing veins. While waiting, it was feasting on the blossom’s nectar in a series of delicate pirouettes. I just kept on snapping pics with my cell phone.

I did once see a butterfly emerging when I had a camera with me. It is a wonderful thing to see, isn’t it? I got some quite good photos, but none as good as yours. I think it flew away before I got the perfect shot. Also, it was in tall grass rather then on such a perfect flower.

Do you have a lot of monarchs up there, Cheryl? Always such a happy site these days. This is especially so. Like she was waiting for you.

This beautiful specimen is similar to a Monarch, but it’s a ‘Great Spangled Fritillary’, Carin.

You’re a butterfly workshop you are. I love what you know about bugs.

Yes, I did Gilly. It was basking in the sun and syphoning the nectar out of the blossom. I took a dozen shots and it was still there when I moved on to photo something else.
